Chinook Salmon (oncorhynchus Tshawytscha) and Rainbow Trout (oncorhynchus Mykiss) Exposed to Copper: Neurophysiological and Histological Effects on the Olfactory System

چکیده
Olfactory epithelial structure and olfactory bulb neurophysiological responses were measured in chinook salmon and rainbow trout in response to 25 to 300 mg copper (Cu)/L. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy, the number of olfactory receptors was significantly reduced in chinook salmon exposed to $50 mg Cu/L and in rainbow trout exposed to $200 mg Cu/L for 1 h. The number of receptors was significantly reduced in both species following exposure to 25 mg Cu/L for 4 h. Transmission electron microscopy of olfactory epithelial tissue indicated that the loss of receptors was from cellular necrosis. Olfactory bulb electroencephalogram (EEG) responses to 1023 M L-serine were initially reduced by all Cu concentrations but were virtually eliminated in chinook salmon exposed to $50 mg Cu/L and in rainbow trout exposed to $200 mg Cu/L within 1 h of exposure. Following Cu exposure, EEG response recovery rates were slower in fish exposed to higher Cu concentrations. The higher sensitivity of the chinook salmon olfactory system to Cu-induced histological damage and neurophysiological impairment parallels the relative species sensitivity observed in behavioral avoidance experiments. This difference in species sensitivity may reduce the survival and reproductive potential of chinook salmon compared with that of rainbow trout in Cu-contaminated waters. Susceptibility of chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), and rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, to infection with Vibrio anguillarum following sublethal copper exposure*
Chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum), and rainbow trout, Salmo gairdneri Richardson, were used to determine if sublethal copper exposure would increase their susceptibility to Vibrio anguillarum infection. Eish were pretreated with copper at fractional levels of the 96 h copper LC50 before exposure to the pathogen. Mortality by vibriosis was greater among fish exposed to 9/0 of th...
متن کاملComparative Genome Mapping Between Chinook Salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) and Rainbow Trout (O. mykiss) Based on Homologous Microsatellite Loci
Comparative genome mapping can rapidly facilitate the transfer of DNA sequence information from a well-characterized species to one that is less described. Chromosome arm numbers are conserved between members of the teleost family Salmonidae, order Salmoniformes, permitting rapid alignment of large syntenic blocks of DNA between members of the group. However, extensive Robertsonian rearrangemen...

Because ivermectin (22,23-Dihydroavermectin B,) has been proposed as an oral treatment against sea lice infections of farmed salmonids, we investigated the toxicity and pathological effects of various doses of ivermectin administered orally every second day to steelhead trout Oncorhynchus mykiss, coho salmon Oncorhynchus kjsutch, chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha and Atlantic salmon Salmo...

A plasmacytoid leukemia of chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, has recently been recognized in seawater netpens in British Columbia, Canada. The disease has occurred at several sites and has caused high mortality. Plasmacytoid leukemia is characterized by a generalized invasion of visceral tissues and the orbit of the eye by plasmacytoid cells. The disease was experimentally transmitted t...
متن کاملRelationship of otolith strontium-to-calcium ratios and salinity: experimental validation for juvenile salmonids
Analysis of otolith strontium (Sr) or strontium-to-calcium (Sr:Ca) ratios provides a powerful tool to reconstruct the chronology of migration among salinity environments for diadromous salmonids. Although use of this method has been validated by examination of known individuals and translocation experiments, it has never been validated under controlled experimental conditions. In this study, in...
